Planning Your Arrival to Rapid City Area Schools
New Student Enrollment
Students new to Rapid City Area Schools will complete the district’s enrollment process before attending school. RCAS provides enrollment information and resources online for families registering students in grades 1–12. Families will be asked to provide required documents, such as a state-certified birth certificate, immunization records, proof of residence, and a Social Security number if available.
Kindergarten Registration
Children who are five years old on or before September 1 are eligible to enroll in kindergarten in Rapid City Area Schools. RCAS also offers a Junior Kindergarten option for students who meet the kindergarten age requirement but may benefit from additional support in academic or social-emotional readiness skills.
Absences Related to Deployment/PCS
Please note that PCS-related absences are not covered under the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children. Students should be registered and enrolled in school as soon as possible upon relocation.
Per the Interstate Compact, a student whose parent or legal guardian has been called to duty, is on leave from deployment, or has immediately returned from deployment may be granted additional excused absences at the discretion of the principal. A variety of factors may be considered when reviewing requests for excused absences, including the timing of state testing or other important academic requirements.
Rapid City Area Schools is committed to supporting military-connected students and their families as they transition into our schools and community.
