Rapid City, S.D. – November 4, 2026 – Rapid City Area Schools (RCAS) extends its sincere appreciation to the Rapid City community following the approval of the $107 million bond referendum in the November 3 election.
The approval marks an important step toward addressing longstanding facility needs throughout the District, including aging infrastructure, safety and security improvements, building renovations, and additional classroom space.
"We are incredibly grateful to everyone who took the time to learn about our schools, ask questions, and participate in this important decision," said Superintendent Dr. Jami Jo Thompson. "Regardless of how you voted, we appreciate your engagement and your willingness to be part of the conversation about the future of our schools."
Over the past several months, District leaders participated in nearly 50 community presentations, informational sessions, and conversations to share information about the Facilities Master Plan and proposed improvements.
The approved bond includes HVAC and energy improvements at Horace Mann Elementary, Meadowbrook Elementary, and North Middle School; safety and security upgrades at five schools; an addition and renovation at South Park Elementary; construction of a new elementary school on the Parkview property; and improvements at Stevens High School.
What's Next for RCAS?
With the bond approved, the District will transition from planning to implementation, including project design, construction scheduling, financial planning, and coordination with professional partners.
"This is a significant investment, and we recognize the responsibility that comes with it," said Chief Financial and Operations Officer Coy Sasse. "Our focus now turns to putting the Facilities Master Plan into action, managing these projects responsibly, and keeping our community informed throughout the process."
RCAS will also introduce several opportunities for residents to stay informed and involved:
Bond Advisory Committee: Information about opportunities to apply will be announced in the coming weeks, creating another avenue for community involvement and oversight.
Bond Progress Page: The District's existing bond information website will transition into a dedicated page featuring project timelines, construction updates, and milestones.
Ongoing Communication: RCAS will share updates through its website, social media channels, local media, and monthly community newsletter.
