Who needs Open Enrollment?

Open Enrollment applications are required for students who do not live in the Rapid City Area School District but want to attend Rapid City Area Schools.
Examples include students who live in:

  • Douglas School District

  • Meade School District

  • Custer School District

  • Hill City School District

What is Open Enrollment?

Open Enrollment is a South Dakota program that allows students in grades K–12 to attend a public school district other than the one where they legally reside, as long as space and programs are available.

Rapid City Area Schools may accept students from other South Dakota districts if doing so does not negatively affect educational programs or capacity.

How to apply:

To apply for Open Enrollment:

  1. Complete the State Open Enrollment Request Form and RCAS Consent Form

  2. Email both completed forms to:

Approval is based on program availability and space.

Approval Process:

  • You will receive a email if your open enrollment is denied or approved.

    If your student is approved for a open enrollment, your student will naturally progress through the RCAS school path.
