The Virtual Campus 2008 - 2009 Courses
We are accepting registrations for 2008 - 2009 school year.
All courses offered are accredited and aligned to Rapid City Area School District Standards, South Dakota Standards, and National Standards. All of the courses are facilitated by South Dakota Certified Teachers who have been successfully trained in online education. All courses have been approved by The South Dakota Virtual High School. http://sdvhs.k12.sd.us/

Enrollments are being accepted Denotes that the course will be starting soon. Enroll now before the term ends.
No longer Offered This Year Denotes that this is a 24 or 36 week course and can not be offered at this time.
Under Development Denotes that the course is under development. The structure and writing are under way. The course should be available soon.

Please check the Consent and Payment Form found on the Registration Page for current charges for courses.
All students must successfully complete a Student Orientation Course before they will be enrolled. There is no cost for this course but must be completed before access to a course is granted. If the student finds that online courses are not suited for them, we will refund money only before course enrollment has taken place. Students who drop while in the Student Orientation will be fully refunded.
Students may drop from their course within the first two weeks of enrollment, however, no money will be refunded. Students who drop their courses after completing the first two weeks will receive a failing grade on their transcripts. It is important that students understand this policy.

Language Arts
World Literature (Grade 12) - 1/2 credit) Enrollments are being accepted
This course includes instruction in early world literature from beginning myths through the eighteenth century. The class will inform students about world literature and cultures. World Literature is a semester course which fulfills the literature requirements for seniors.
English 9 A & B (Grade 9) - 1/2 credit per section Enrollments are being accepted
English 9 is a year long course satisfying the 9th grade English requirement. We have divided it into two sections. Both are needed to fulfill the ninth grade English requirement. This course will include all English standards in the ninth grade reading, writing, listening / viewing, and speaking in an integrated approach.
English 10 A & B (Grade 10) - 1/2 credit per section Enrollments are being accepted
English 10 is a year long course satisfying the 10th grade English requirement. We have divided it into two sections. Both are needed to fulfill the tenth grade English requirement. This course will include all English standards in the tenth grade reading, writing, listening / viewing, and speaking in an integrated approach.

English 11 - A & B (Grade 11) - 1/2 credit per section Enrollments are being accepted
English 11 is a year long course that has been divided into two sections and can be taken independently of each other. Both are needed to satisfy the 11th grade English requirement. Reading, writing, and viewing skills are taught in an integrated approach. Particular emphasis is placed on the writing process. Students will also satisfy the state American literature requirement in English 11.

Technical Writing (Grade 12) - 1/2 credit) Enrollments are being accepted
This course emphasizes the development of clear, concise, writing skills that are necessary for success in both post-secondary education as well as the world of work. Among these skills are the following: creating and interpreting charts and graphs; writing memos, letters, and reports; conducting primary and secondary research; analyzing tasks or processes; improving listening and speaking skills; solving problems and resolving conflict. Students will discover and evaluate their computer skills. This course emphasizes individual projects and small group work.
Seniors are required to have a semester of composition and a semester of literature. This course will fulfill the composition half credit. This course is considered a college prep course.
Creative Writing (Grade 12) - 1/2 credit Enrollments are being accepted
Creative Writing emphasizes instruction in creative thinking that leads to creative products. This course covers the writing of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry while acknowledging that all writing is creative writing. Creative Writing recognizes Standard English but introduces the possibilities within literary license. A research paper is required. Seniors are required to have a semester of composition and a semester of literature. This course will fulfill the composition half credit.

Senior Composition (Grade 12) - 1/2 credit Enrollments are being accepted
Senior Composition is a writing class with emphasis on essays, research papers, grammar, and usage skills, and revision techniques. A research paper is required. Seniors are required to have a semester of composition and a semester of literature. This course will fulfill the composition half credit.

Social Sciences
Civics (Grade 9) - 1/2 credit Enrollments are being accepted
This class covers the duties and responsibilities of American citizenship. It will emphasize the importance of having a government, the significance of political participation and influence, and the basic foundations of our government. The course will conclude with a study of local city and county government and state government.
Current World Affairs (Grades 10-11-12) - 1/2 credit Enrollments are being accepted
This course will emphasize current news at local, state, national, and international levels. The goal of the class is to inform students on events taking place in the world and the background of these events. Events will be analyzed and the impact of these events will be discussed.
U.S. Government (Grade 12) - 1/2 credit Enrollments are being accepted
Students will study the constitution, fundamentals of democracy, and U.S. government with the national level being stressed. The course will emphasize the interaction of the governmental institutions and the ways in which they affect the individual and the ways the individual can make contributions.
U.S. History 1 (Grade 11) - 1/2 credit Enrollments are being accepted
This course explores the history of the United States between the years 1840-1920. Students will compare and contrast the social, political, and economic forces that comprised our nation.
U.S. History 2 (Grade 11) - 1/2 credit Enrollments are being accepted
This course will investigate the years 1920 to the present. Students will be required to analyze and draw conclusions regarding our nation's past, present, and future. Students will participate in primary and secondary resource analysis.

Native American Heritage (Grades 10-11-12) - 1/2 credit Under Development. Projected Release: 2008 - 2009
Students will explore a variety of Indian nations within our borders. A special emphasis will be placed on the Lakota history, culture, and contemporary issues.

Ancient History (Grades 10-11-12) - 1/2 credit Enrollments are being accepted
This course will study the development of the four river valley civilizations of Egypt, Mesopotamia, India, and China. Other areas studied will include classical Greece, Ancient Rome, and early Christianity, the Byzantine Empire, and the origins of Islam. World History is not a prerequisite for Ancient History. Either course may be taken separately.
World History (Grades 10-11-12) - 1/2 credit Enrollments are being accepted
This course covers the time period from 1350 A.D. through W.W.II. Included in this study will be the Renaissance, Reformation, The Spanish Empire, England Tudor & Stuart Kings, Age of Absolute Monarchs, Restoration, Romanticism, French Revolution, W.W.I., Russian Revolution, and W.W.II. Ancient History is not prerequisite for World History. Either course may be taken separately.
World Geography (Grade 9) - 1/2 credit Enrollments are being accepted
Students will study the physical, political, and cultural geography of the Eastern Hemisphere countries. They will analyze the cultures, histories, governments, and religions. They will also understand the interdependence of world economics and peoples.

Psychology (Grade 11-12) - 1/2 credit Enrollments are being accepted
Psychology is the study of the behavior and the mental processes of humans. The course will emphasis the mind and its development; principles of learning; memory; sensation and perception; personality theories; emotion and stress; states of consciousness; motivation; and abnormal behavior. As a result of this class, students will understand themselves and others better.

Physical Science 1 & 2 (Grades 9-10-11-12) - 1/2 credit Each Enrollments are being accepted
Critical thinking skills, lab skills, and basic physical science concepts will be the focus of these classes. The emphasis will be on the close relationship between these areas and how they are important to the individual student and society. These skills (including data reporting, safety in the lab, use of conversions, scientific equipment, and formula manipulation) are then used in various physical science topics. In order to get a full credit of 9th grade science, students must take both semesters in any order.

  • Physical Science 1 will focus on chemistry and its application in the real world for one semester credit.
  • Physical Science 2 will focus on physics and its application in the real world for one semester credit.

Anatomy & Physiology 1 & 2 (Grades 11-12) - 1/2 credit each) Enrollments are being accepted
It is recommended that students who register for this class have received a grade of “C” or better in Cellular Biology and Living Systems.


  • Serious biology students will receive an in-depth study of basic human anatomy and physiology in this course. Systems covered In Anatomy and Physiology 1: Body Orientation, Integumentary, Skeletal, Muscular, Circulatory, Respiratory, and Digestive.
  • Systems covered In Anatomy and Physiology 2: Nervous, Excretory, Endocrine, Lymphatic/Immune, and Reproductive.

Biology 1 & 2 (Grade 10) - 1/2 credit Under Development. Projected Release: 2008 - 2009
Biology 1 & 2 are a one-semester course, traditional approach to biology geared toward the post-secondary bound student.

  • Selected topics for Biology 1 include microscope, cells, genetics, and biotechnology with an emphasis on laboratory investigations in all areas.
    Selected topics include classification, the 6 kingdoms, and the systems of the human body.

Computer Studies

Information & Communication Technology I (formally Computer Management Systems) (Grades 9-10-11-12) - 1/2 credit Enrollments are being accepted

  • Completion of Keyboarding 1 or equivalent is strongly recommended for success in this class.
  • This class also meets the requirement for the South Dakota Regent Scholarship.

This course will take the papers and projects you create to a higher level of success! Information Communication Technology helps you learn to use the tools you use in creating assignments that require word processing, spreadsheets, databases, or presentations.

Information & Communication Technology II (formally Information Management Systems) (Grades 9-10-11-12) - 1/2 credit Enrollments are being accepted

  • Completion of Computer Information Systems or Computer Studies 1 is essential for success in this class.
  • This class also meets the requirement for the South Dakota Regent Scholarship.
  • Microsoft Office is highly recommended for the successful completion

Take your assignments to the next level showing your expertise in integrating software applications into projects and papers. Advanced techniques in word processing, databases, spreadsheets, and presentations will make your papers and projects shine. You will benefit from this clans because you gain solid, working knowledge of industry-standard software applications.

ePublishing (formally Digital Design and Publishing) (Grades 9-10-11-12) -1/2 credit Enrollments are being accepted
Learn the basics of design for electronic and print media. By the end of the course you will have the skills to design your own CD covers, project covers, flyers, and much more.

Mathematics

Algebra 1 (Grades 9-10-11-12) - 1 credit Enrollments are being accepted

  • Completion of Pre-algebra with a grade of "C" or better is recommended for success in this class.
This is a full year course and is offered as a 24-week online course. Time dedication is a must for successful completion. There are daily assignments and weekly quizzes.

Students work with the real number system using the four basic operations. Variables are used to represent real numbers and students learn how to perform the basic operations with expressions containing variables. Primary topics which will be covered are signed numbers, solving linear equations and inequalities, factoring, algebraic fractions, lines and linear systems, quadratic equations, and simplification of radicals.

Geometry (Grades 10-11-12) - 1 credit Enrollments are being accepted

This is a full year course and is offered as 24-week online course. Time dedication is a must for successful completion. There are daily assignments and weekly quizzes.

  • This course is designed for students who have completed Algebra 1 (with a grade of "C" or better) or Algebra 10. This is a higher level geometry class.

Students study plane geometry, logic, and deductive reasoning. Areas of emphasis will be on definitions and postulates, formal proof, parallel and perpendicular lines, congruent triangles, similar polygons, right triangles, circles, construction, area, and volume.

Business, Career, and Technical Education

Personal Finance: Dollars and Sense (Grades 10-11-12) - .5 credit Under Development. Projected Releases 2008- 2009

This course is designed to assist students to acquire skills to manage personal financial resources and develop the ability to solve "real world" problems in order to become productive citizens. Areas of study include personal financial planning, financial services, budgeting, investments, credit management, and insurance protection; consumer purchases, rights, and responsibilities; and decision-making skills for all aspects of life as consumers. Project-based and cooperative learning, simulations, real world experiences, and computer / technology applications will assist students in competencies needed to move securely and successfully into an independent lifestyles.

Microsoft Excel and Word are recommended for successful completion of this course.

Physical Education

Independent Fitness & Wellness for Life 1 & 2(Grades 10-11-12) - .5 credit each Under Development. Projected Release: 2008 - 2009

This course is available as an alternative method for students to receive 0.5 for each course for high school physical education credit. Students will be required to complete a minimum of 60 hours of independent, unsupervised physical activity monitored by wrist heart rate monitor and 24 health related activities. This course is designed to improve total body fitness by participating in a variety of physical activities. Students must participate in physical and wellness activities at least 5 times per week. A physical education instructor will monitor activity progress and completion of health topics.

Middle School Listings

Middle School Language Arts (Grades 6-7-8) Enrollments are being accepted

The following courses are each based on two 12 week trimesters (168 days).

  • Language Arts 8th Grade: The English curriculum for grade 8 consists of oral communication and speech, written communication (including capitalization, punctuation, paragraphs, and compositions), grammar, vocabulary, study skills, and literature.
  • Language Arts 7th Grade: The English curriculum consists of oral communication and speech, written communication (including capitalization, punctuation, paragraphs, and compositions), grammar, vocabulary, study skills, and literature.
  • Language Arts 6th Grade: The English curriculum consists of oral communication and speech, written communication (including capitalization, punctuation, paragraphs, and compositions), grammar, vocabulary, spelling, study skills, and literature.

Middle School Pre-Algebra A & B (Grade 8) Enrollments are being accepted

The following courses are based on two12 week trimesters (168 days).

  • Pre-Algebra: Students gain knowledge. demonstrate comprehension, apply analyze, construct, and evaluate content information. Students apply multiple learning strategies and activities to fulfill these course requirements.
  • 6th Grade Mathematics: The Mathematics curriculum consists of a review and mastery of the four basic operations with whole numbers and the use of these operations with both common and decimal fractions. Other area studies will include powers, solving equations and inequalities, estimation, rules of divisibility, proportions, ratios, and geometry. Students who demonstrate exemplary math skills/qualifications may be grouped for instruction.
  • 7th Grade Mathematics: Seventh grade mathematics is a review and a continuation of material in grade six. Students will continue to use the four basic operations with whole numbers and improve their skills with these operations using both common and decimal fractions. Other areas studied will include powers, solving equations and inequalities, estimation, rules of divisibility, and fraction and decimal equivalents. Problem solving strategies will be stressed. Students who demonstrate exemplary math skills/qualifications may be grouped for Pre-Algebra.
