Dear Families,

Welcome to First Grade! My name is Karla Herdina and I am very excited to have the opportunity to work with your child this year. Our classroom will be a place where children are encouraged to learn, grow, and make wonderful memories. I look forward to meeting you, and getting to know you and your child.

I have been teaching for 17 years with experience in First Grade, Third Grade, and Special Education. This is my second year of teaching at South Canyon School. (I previously taught first grade for 5 years at General Beadle Elementary). I have found that teaching first graders is a very hands-on and rewarding career. I could not do my job without the help from the many caring and dedicated individuals here at South Canyon School. Our class is fortunate to have additional support for Literacy. The door to room 2 is always open and I encourage you to volunteer in our room. By working as a team of teacher, parent, and student we can have a truly outstanding school year.

An important part of First Grade is to continue to learn how to handle big responsibilities.
Please help your child remember to bring a back pack to school each day to carry home important papers, homework, little books, etc. The following are some bits and pieces of helpful information:

Friday Folders: A folder will be sent home weekly on Friday. Please read the information, go over your child’s work, and send the folder back on Monday. The folders are a main source of communication between school and home. Please help us to keep the communication lines open!

Absences: Please let the office know if your child is going to miss school. Whatever work they miss will be their responsibility to make up either at school or at home.

Snacks / treats: We will have a cracker snack break after morning recess. Please see attached snack note. If you would like to bring treats for other occasions, please bring enough for the entire class. The district policy is that all treats must be store bought with the ingredients listed on the package. (We are no longer allowed to serve home made goodies).

Water bottles: At times our school becomes quite warm. Your child is allowed to bring a water bottle to school. These bottles will only be used for drinking water.

Class rules: Our class will be discussing rules to help keep our classroom a safe and fun place to be. When we have agreed upon our class rules, I will send a copy home with your child.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I look forward to a wonderful year as your child’s First Grade teacher!

Ms. Herdina
